The new RED cameras are truely fantastic as the Laforet blog points out - but you can get great results from a DSLR if you know what you are doing.

Why I create moving as well as still images

I use HD video to provide a better quality image for my clients - everything can be down converted to supply 720p web video and Standard definition for DVD production.

• 1080p, 1080i (1920 x 1080)

•1080i (1,080 actively interlaced lines of resolution)

•1080p (1,080 actively progressively scanned lines)

•720p (1280 x 720)

•HDV (1440 x 1080)

• PAL (old standard definition 720 x 576) 576i

• NTSC - US- (old standard definition 640 x 480) 480i

I also have a 1D Mk111
and a Panasonic GF1

and you also real do need a stand-alone video camera and at present a am using a
Sony NEX VG10E - it captures to SD card and has interchangeable lenses - I can also use my canon lenses with an adapter!

• Canon 7D handles better and easier to focus

• Canon 5D - shallower DOF due to sensor size

• Canon 5D - native ISO’s - 160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500

• Canon 7D - up to 800

•Shutter speed - filmic look 50th of a second

• Aperture - for a shallow DOP you've got to use a tripod
otherwise at least 5.6 if moving around and/or want to be safe.

Capture Cards

I like to use big here and although I have a number of 4 and 8 gig sandisk and Lexar cards I like to use the 16 and 32 gig SanDisk Extreme cards for capturing video.

Lenses

I have a wide variety of lenses that I use to give my clients great photography and video.

As a Canon user these include:
• Tokina 11-16 for my 7d
• Canon 24-70mm L
• Canon 24-105mm L
• Canon 50mm f1.4
• Canon 70-200mm f4 L - its a lot lighter than the 2.8!
• Canon 24mm TSE L
• Tamron 17-35mm
• Sigma 100mm Macro

Camera support for video is a must

Supports area a must - I use manfrotto tripods and a 503 video head, and monopod is also a great idea and is easy to move around with when shooting

A Zacuto Z-Finder is a must

I use a Zacuto Z-Finder with my Canon 5D Mk11 and 7D - bought from Rubber Monkey in Wellington.
You have just got to have one.

Zacuto also has an evf viewfinder coming out - really cool I think.

A monitor for your HD SLR

I use a small Ikan monitor to help with focusing - it works well on my Canon 7D

Sound - just as important as the video itself

I use a number or shotgun mics and radio mics including

Rode Video Mic

There is also a new Rode Video Mic Pro coming out

I also use the Senheiser EW100 a great little radio mic.

and the ZoomH4N is a must when using HD SLR's which don't record the best sound in the world.

Windsock or a dead rabbit is also a good idea

I do a little work with Soundtrack Pro
Also I record directly into FinalCut Pro with an Edirol UA 25

Plural Eyes allows you to work with different recording hardware and sources, and then align it in Final Cut Pro or other software you may be using.

The perfect film

When making a movie

• Have a story to tell I know this may sound obvious but is usually the biggest mistake of all

• Collecting footage is a little different to shooting stills - you need
- multiple angles
- Cut a way clips
- background or ambient sound
